Breast implant surgery procedure
Removal and replacement
Breast implant removal and replacement involve exchanging the implants in the breast for newer ones. It is typically performed through the same incisions which were made during the initial breast augmentation.
Capsulectomy
The breast implant removal and replacement procedure is sometimes accompanied by a capsulectomy before the new implant is put in place. This means removing the scar tissue that may have built up around the implant.
The body will naturally develop scar tissue around the breast implant, known as a ‘capsule’, which can harden and cause discomfort and alter the shape of the breast.
Capsulectomy can address issues related to the look and feel of the breast and help to alleviate pain.
Should I remove and replace my breast implants?
Many women who have had breast augmentation plastic surgery keep their breast implants for a very long time. The most common reasons for removal – with or without replacement of breast implants – are for a change in size.
Most often this is for bigger breast implants, but sometimes patients wish to replace them with smaller ones.
There are additional reasons why women may want to have their breast implants removed:
Capsular contracture
Another reason for having breast implants removed is capsular contracture. This is where there is an abnormal thickening of the normal scar tissue that the body forms around all breast implants.
Ruptured implant
Rupture of the implants is another, less common, the reason for breast implant removal surgery.
Breast uplift surgery
Many women will have new breast implants re-inserted either alone or in combination with breast uplift surgery and / or fat transfer procedure.
Miss Breahna will discuss all options with you during your consultation – including removal and not having the implants replaced – and support you through this process, whichever decision you take.
Am I suitable for breast implant surgery?
You may be suitable for breast implant removal surgery if any of the below apply to you:
- You wish to change the size of your breast implants (go bigger or smaller)
- You experience symptoms related to hardening or rupture of your implants
- You have decided that you no longer require your breast implants.
What are the benefits?
The benefits of removing and replacing breast implants include:
- Changing your cup size, either bigger or smaller
- Changing the position of the breast implants, if desired
- Upgrading the quality of the breast implants
- Addressing any issues with the look and feel of the breast implants
- Taking advantage of updated technologies in breast augmentation and cosmetic surgery.
How safe is breast implant removal surgery?
Due to the popularity of breast augmentation, breast implant replacement is a commonly performed cosmetic surgery procedure that is considered to be safe.
Patient welfare is paramount and the operations are performed by Miss Breahna, a skilled cosmetic surgeon who specialises in breast surgery.
Will implant removal and replacement be painful?
The procedure is performed using a general anaesthetic, so no pain will be felt during the surgery. A suitable course of pain relief will be prescribed to help with any discomfort during your recovery period.
What is the recovery time like?
After your breast implant surgery, you should expect an overnight stay in the hospital for 2–3 days. You will need to take it easy for around 2 weeks afterwards, to allow for successful healing (depending on medical advice and your follow-up consultation).
Time off work may be required post-op. You may need to allow up to 3 weeks before travelling abroad, and up to 12 weeks before returning to the gym.
Patient safety and aftercare
Follow-up consultations will be arranged at 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1-year post-op to closely monitor your physical well-being.
Are there side effects or risks?
Side effects
As with breast augmentation, the removal and replacement of implants for many patients will also see swelling and bruising for a few weeks after surgery.
Possible risks
Infection, bleeding, delayed healing, loss of nipple, poor scarring and asymmetry are infrequent risks of breast implants surgery.
