Pinnaplasty

Pinnaplasty

Prominent ears are most often than not a condition from birth, although occasionally can be caused by an injury. A child or an adult with ears “sticking out” can suffer from low self esteem or even bullying and may result in patients growing their hair or wearing hats and headbands to cover them.

Ear pinning, also known as pinnaplasty or otoplasty is a surgical procedure that changes the shape of the ears by placing them closer to the head. Although pinnaplasty is frequently carried out in children between the age of five and 15,  it can be performed in adults too. Children need to be at least five years old because that is when the ear cartilages are fully developed.

Prominent ear correction is done as a day case under either local or general anaesthetic. It involves making an incision behind the ear and reshaping the cartilages with permanent sutures. The ears are then pinned back into place with sutures and the skin is stitched up with dissolvable sutures. After the otoplasty the patient wears a dressing for 10 days to alow the wounds to heal up. Newly pinned back ears need to be protected with a headband day and night for six to 12 weeks.

After pinnaplasty you will be able to return to school or work in two weeks. For the first week you will need to keep your dressings dry and head elevated. Sports including swimming should be avoided for at least six weeks. Miss Breahna will tailor your recommendations according to your individual lifestyle. Following these instructions is an important part of a successful otoplasty.

Frequently asked questions

You are a good candidate if you are unhappy with the appearance of particularly protruding ears. A thorough consultation will ensure you are fully informed on the details of the surgery, and what results to expect.

Pinnaplasty is a safe procedure for correcting the appearance of prominent ears, however risks such as discomfort, bruising, swelling and scarring are to be expected. Miss Breahna will explain all risks in detail when you come for your consultation.

Pain and discomfort are to be expected with pinnaplasty. During the consultation we will discuss the most suitable anaesthetic to use to ensure you won’t feel a thing during the procedure. You may need to take oral pain relief for a few weeks after surgery to minimise any post-surgery discomfort.

Whilst bruising will disappear after 7 – 10 days, swelling may take several weeks to subside, along with any sensitivity. Occasionally the stitches can loosen up and part of (or the entire ear) may need to be pinned back again. Scars are permanent but will be hidden behind the ears, with the right scar management techniques scarring can be kept to a minimum.

Results are usually visible 3 months after the operation when the swelling has disappeared and the ears have settled into their new position. Scars are often hidden but may take up to 12 months to fully soften.
