Breast Enlargement – Breast Augmentation

Breast Enlargement – Breast Augmentation

Breast Enlargement, or breast augmentation, also known as ‘boob job’, is a surgical procedure that involves the insertion of breast implants in order to enhance the size and shape of the breasts.

Small or less shapely breasts may be genetic, or as a result of weight loss, ageing or pregnancy and can leave you feeling self-conscious. Whatever the reason for choosing breast enlargement, the change in breast size and shape can have a profound impact on your body image and self confidence.

A pre-operative assessment will establish your personal goals and outline the procedure itself, including the type and approximate size of the implants, any pre-treatment and post-operative advice and ensure that you complete a fully informed consent form.

The procedure can be purely for cosmetic purposes (although the benefits often go beyond the simply physical) or to restore breasts after surgery, for instance following breast cancer surgery. Breast augmentation can also restore symmetry and also address any post-pregnancy, breastfeeding or weight loss changes and reduction in breast size.

Post pregnancy breast augmentation can be part of a package of surgery known colloquially as a ‘Mummy Makeover’, this targeting different areas of the body during one course of treatment, for instance liposuction to remove fat from the tummy or thighs. The fat grafted can be used as part of the breast augmentation.

Breast Enlargement Procedure

Breast enlargement, also known as breast augmentation or augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic surgery procedure aimed at increasing the size, shape, or fullness of the breasts. The procedure involves the insertion of breast implants under the breast tissue or chest muscles.

Before the Procedure

You will have a consultation Anca Breahna, to discuss the desired outcome, the size and type of implants (silicone or saline), and the specifics of the surgical procedure. Anca will explain the risks of surgery.

This consultation may also involve discussing your medical history, a physical examination, and possibly some pre-operative tests to ensure you are in good health for the surgery.

Who Needs Breast Enlargement?

There are many reasons a woman might choose breast augmentation surgery. The six most commonly cited are:

  1. My breasts have lost volume and firmness since I’ve had children.
  2. My breasts look deflated since I lost weight.
  3. One of my breasts is noticeably smaller than the other.
  4. My breasts are too small for my body.
  5. I feel self-conscious in form-fitting clothing like swimsuits, or in tops that have a plunging neckline.
  6. When clothing fits my hips, it’s too large at the bustline.

Breast enlargement surgery is sought after by patients for many reasons, ranging from aesthetic desires to reconstructive needs. Anca works closely you to determine if breast enlargement is suitable for you, considering both physical health and psychological readiness:

  1. Aesthetic Enhancement: Many patients opt for breast enlargement to enhance their body contour, improve proportionality, or increase breast volume that they perceive as insufficient. Anca understands that these desires are deeply personal and approaches each case with sensitivity and professionalism.
  2. Reconstruction After Mastectomy: Patients who have undergone mastectomy due to breast cancer or other conditions may choose breast enlargement as part of their reconstructive surgery. Anca offers compassionate care and expertise to help these patients regain their confidence and body image.
  3. Correction of Asymmetry: Breast asymmetry is common and can be a source of self-consciousness for many. Breast enlargement can balance asymmetrical breasts, achieving symmetry and a natural look that many patients desire.
  4. Restoration After Pregnancy and Breastfeeding: Pregnancy and breastfeeding can lead to changes in breast size and shape. Anca assists patients seeking to restore their pre-pregnancy breast appearance through enlargement surgery.

What Are the Benefits of Breast Augmentation Surgery?

For many, there are physical benefits, the surgery either creating breasts that are fuller and more in keeping with the breasts the person has always wanted, restoring lost volume (lost through ageing, pregnancy or other cause) or correcting asymmetry. For those post-surgery, for example for breast cancer, there is of course the profound benefit of restoring the appearance to one closer to the pre-surgery appearance.

However, the benefits go far beyond the simply physical. Breast augmentation can greatly boost self-confidence and self-esteem. As with any part of the body, if a person has concerns over the appearance it can greatly affect their confidence and mood and so impact on all areas of their life. Work can suffer, relationships and friendships too. This will also be addressed during the consultation, the surgeon assessing the reasons the surgery is sought and checking that the results will meet expectation, that the surgery truly is in the patient’s best interest.

How do I know which Breast Augmentation is Right for Me?

Breast Implant Options

Silicon Implants and Saline Implants are available in a range of sizes and shapes.

Breast Incision Options

Implants can be inserted through an Inframammary, Periareolar or Transaxillary  incision.

Implant Placement Options

Your implants can be placed submuscular, subglandular or  a combination of both – dual plane.

Fat Transfer Augmentation

If you are seeking a modest increase in breast size and a more natural approach, fat transfer is an option. This technique involves harvesting fat from another area of your body through liposuction and then injecting it into the breasts. Anca discusses the viability of this method with patients, considering factors such as available body fat and desired outcome.

Breast Enlargement with Implants

The choice between round and teardrop-shaped (anatomical) implants, as well as smooth or textured surfaces, impacts the final appearance of the breasts. Anca advises on the best options based on your anatomy and aesthetic goals, ensuring a natural and proportionate enhancement. Anca employs various incision techniques to insert breast implants, including under the breast fold (inframammary), around the nipple (periareolar), or under the arm (transaxillary). The choice of incision is influenced by the type of implant, your anatomy, and personal preference to minimise visible scarring.

How is the Procedure Performed ?

Here’s an overview of what typically happens on the day of the surgery, particularly in the context of a procedure conducted in Chester by Miss Breahna.

On the Day of the Surgery

1. Arrival and Preparation: Upon arrival at the surgical facility, the patient will undergo final preparations for surgery. This may include administering a sedative or anesthesia to ensure comfort during the procedure. The choice between general anesthesia (where the patient is completely asleep) and local anesthesia with sedation (where the area is numbed, and the patient is relaxed but awake) will have been discussed beforehand.

2. Photographic Documentation: A series of photographs of the breasts will be taken from different angles. These preoperative images are crucial for planning the surgery, discussing expectations, and comparing pre-and post-surgery results.

3. Surgical Marking: Miss Breahna will carefully mark the patient’s breasts with a surgical marker to outline where the incisions will be made. This step is crucial for precision and guides the surgeon during the procedure.

4. Incision Options: The incision location is strategically chosen to minimize visible scarring. The main options include:

– Inframammary: In the crease beneath the breast, which is the most common approach due to its direct access to the breast tissue and chest muscles.
– Periareolar: Around the areola, which can be an option for patients who require a smaller incision or are having a simultaneous breast lift.
– Transaxillary: In the armpit, an option for patients who prefer no scars on the breast itself.

5. Implant Placement: Breast implants can be placed either:
– Submuscular (under the chest muscle): Provides a more natural look and is beneficial for thin patients with little breast tissue. However, recovery may be longer compared to subglandular placement.

– Subglandular (between the breast tissue and the chest muscle): Often results in a shorter recovery period and less post-operative pain but may be more visible, especially in thin patients.

– Dual Plane (implant partially covered by chest muscle): Offers more support of the implant by the chest muscle while allowing the lower half of the implant to sit directly under the breast tissue.

6. Closing the Incisions: Once the implants are in place, Miss Breahna will close the incisions with sutures, which may be dissolvable or require removal during a follow-up appointment. The surgical sites are then covered with dressings and, in some cases, a support bra or garment to support the breasts during the initial recovery phase.

After the Procedure

Post-surgery, patients are moved to a recovery area to be monitored as they wake up from anesthesia. Instructions for post-operative care, including medication for pain and swelling, care for the surgical site, and follow-up appointments, will be provided.

Recovery time varies by individual but typically involves a few days of rest followed by several weeks of reduced activity to allow the body to heal and adjust to the implants.

Breast enlargement surgery can significantly impact a person’s body image and self-esteem. However, it’s crucial to have realistic expectations and to discuss all aspects of the procedure, including potential risks and complications, with a qualified plastic surgeon.

Breast enlargement is a procedure designed to increase the size, shape, or fullness of the breast. Consultant Plastic Surgeon Anca Breahna, a skilled surgeon in this field, utilises different methods to achieve the desired results. The choice of technique and implants depends on multiple factors, including your body type, desired outcome, and health considerations.

Breast Enlargement Recovery

Breast augmentation is carried out under general anaesthetic. It is a relatively straightforward procedure for any skilled cosmetic surgeon, but still one that requires a period of recovery from for the patient.

An overnight stay in hospital is typical, after which painkillers will be used for a while. A follow-up appointment takes place around seven to 10 days later.

Miss Breahna maintains high standards of after care at her breast enlargement clinics in Chester and will arrange follow up appointments at around 1 week, 6 weeks, 3 months and 6 months post surgery, closely monitoring your physical well-being.
