Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty

Labiaplasty or labia reduction is a surgical procedure which aims to reduce the size and improve the shape of the labia minora and majora.

Whilst both labia minora (inner lips of the vagina) and labia majora (outer lips) come in various shapes and sizes, in some women the skin of the inner lips protrudes excessively, and may be due to childbirth, ageing or the effect of hormones. Whilst having stretched labia minora is perfectly normal, some women are unhappy with the way they look and feel uncomfortable when wearing tight underwear or trousers. They can cause discomfort during physical exercise, such as cycling, and during sexual intercourse.

Labia Reduction Surgery

Labiaplasty (labia reduction surgery) can help especially if the lips are long, large and asymmetrical. It can be done either through a straight line reduction of the redundant tissue or by V-shape cut to reduce the overall length of the labia. With the wedge excision technique, there is no stitch line along the outer edge of the labia and the resulting scars are barely visible.

Frequently asked questions

You may be suitable for labia reduction if you are uncomfortable with the look of your inner lips and experience irritation or discomfort as a result when wearing certain clothing or undertaking particular activities.

No pain will be felt during the procedure itself, as it is performed under a general anaesthetic. The coming weeks will experience some sensitivity and discomfort, but will be managed by a course of mild painkillers.

This treatment will cause moderate swelling and bruising, that will ease within a few days. There is also a risk of infection and bleeding, but this is rare.

You will need to allow 1-2 weeks for labiaplasty recovery and healing, taking time off work. Normal everyday light activities can be resumed the next day. Driving will be possible after 2 weeks. It will need up to 4 weeks before commencing sexual intercourse and travelling abroad and up to 6 weeks before returning to the gym.
