What is a labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure to improve the shape or size of the inner and outer lips of the vaginal opening. It is commonly performed for both medical and cosmetic reasons and in the hands of a plastic surgeon as skilled as Anca Breahna patient satisfaction rates for this surgery are high.

What is ‘normal’ anyway?

Every woman’s labia is different.

The labia minora (inner labia) and the labia majora (outer labia) come in all shapes and sizes and a degree of asymmetry is completely normal. The size and shape of your labia minora are determined by your genes but ageing and childbirth may affect their shape or size too.

However, if you are dissatisfied with your labia for aesthetic reasons or they are causing discomfort during sexual intimacy or physical activities you could consult Miss Breahna to see if a labiaplasty could help you.

Reasons to consider labiaplasty surgery

The consequences of having a large amount of excess tissue in the vaginal area can be profound even resulting in psychological distress and medical issues.

It is possible for both the labia majora and labia minora to protrude to such a degree that they are visible through tight clothes, especially sports clothing and leggings. Unsurprisingly this can have a negative effect on self-confidence and body image.

Women with this amount of excess tissue may also experience physical discomfort during everyday activities. Sexual intercourse may be uncomfortable and physical activity like horse riding, cycling or running can cause irritation.

Enlarged labia may harbour bacteria and can make you more susceptible to recurrent urinary tract infections.

A labiaplasty procedure may provide relief from physical symptoms and can significantly improve the appearance of the labia.

What happens during labia reduction surgery?

Plastic surgery to remodel the labia minora and labia majora is uncomplicated in Anca Breahna’s skilled hands. She usually performs this as an outpatient procedure under local anaesthetic. A labiaplasty typically takes about an hour.

Miss Breahna uses two labiaplasty techniques to remove unwanted tissue. The first is a straight incision and trimming of the labial tissue. The alternative is the wedge procedure during which a V-shaped incision is made to remove excess length from the labia.

Whichever method is used, Miss Breahna always ensures that the fine scars left after surgery are barely visible and that they are positioned away from the edge of the labia where they could cause irritation.

The appropriate technique for your surgery will depend on your unique anatomy and will be explained at your consultation with Miss Breahna.

Recovering from plastic surgery to the labia

You will experience some discomfort in your genital area after this surgical procedure but simple pain relief will be sufficient to reduce pain and sensitivity in the first few days after surgery. As with all surgery, labial reduction can cause minor bleeding and swelling.

It is important to support your body’s healing process and rest for a while before you resume your normal routine. Although labiaplasty is a straightforward cosmetic procedure, Anca Breahna still advises her patients to take up to a fortnight off work and to refrain from driving for the same amount of time. Complete recovery may take between four to six weeks. Sexual intimacy should be comfortable after about four weeks. You can return to the gym after six weeks.
