How Much Weight Can You Lose With A Tummy Tuck?

The tummy tuck procedure, also known as abdominoplasty, is often desired by those looking to lose weight around the tummy region.

However, how much weight is it possible to lose and is this the same for everyone or does it vary on a patient-by-patient basis?

Leading UK cosmetic surgeon Anca Breahna answers that very question in this post.

What A Tummy Tuck Is And Is Not

A tummy tuck is a procedure in which unwanted fat is removed from the abdominal region, this through the insertion of a small canula.

It therefore does lead to some weight loss – the weight of the fat removed.

However, it is not a weight loss procedure as such. A tummy tuck is not suitable for those looking to lose a large amount of weight, it is not a solution to obesity.

A tummy tuck is a cosmetic procedure, it tackles fat in a specific region, one that is often stubborn. Many of us find that however hard we exercise, however good our diet, fat remains in some areas.

The tummy tuck is for an otherwise healthy person who has concerns about the appearance of their tummy. It might lead to a lack of self confidence, negative self image can harm our self esteem.

However, if someone is, for example, 30 or 40 kg overweight, the tummy tuck is not a suitable procedure to address this weight.

But, How Much Fat Can Be Removed?

While we have given detail as to what a tummy tuck is, we haven’t actually answered the question posed.

The amount of fat that can be removed is typically between four and 10 pounds – up to 4.5kg.

However, it may be better to think of it in terms of the shape of the tummy as it is hard to visualise what a few kilograms of fat actually looks like, how much flatter will this make the tummy?

The tummy tuck will lead to a flatter, firmer abdomen and this then helps to enhance the rest of the figure, for instance many women will find that their breasts seem that bit fuller simply because they are viewed in relation to the now flatter tummy.

The results possible would be discussed in consultation, this the first step with any cosmetic surgery.

The consultation is your opportunity to talk, and for the surgeon to listen. You outline your hopes for the procedure, and the surgeon can talk you through the results achievable and how you would look post surgery.

Many also find that the tummy tuck acts as a motivator to then get fitter still and maintain the new, improved figure.

With a sensible diet and exercise, the figure can be maintained and maybe even some weight loss achieved in other areas such as inner thigh. However, the process can be undone of course, failure to exercise and poor diet will ultimately lead to weight returning to the tummy region.

Different Forms of Tummy Tuck

There are actually several versions of the tummy tuck procedure and full details can be seen by viewing the fact sheet.

A mini abdominoplasty is the procedure that makes the smallest change while an extended abdominoplasty also targets skin and fat in the loins and the back.

However, the patient does not need to be an expert in the various forms, they would simply discuss their requirements with the surgeon who would then use their skill and experience to advise as to the best course of action.

The partial or mini tummy tuck would be for those who are within 10% of their ideal body weight, while an extended abdominoplasty is for people with significant amounts of excess skin and fat. It is often for those wishing to redefine their figure after substantial weight loss.

Recovery From Tummy Tuck

Whichever version of the tummy tuck is suitable, there will be a recovery period required.

The surgery itself requires a stay in hospital of one or two nights and recovery will then take at least a couple of weeks, time off work often recommended.

Driving can be resumed after two or three weeks and it is likely to be six weeks until sport or gym sessions can be resumed.

Surgical garments (an abdominal binder) will be required to be worn day and night for six weeks.
