What is liposuction?
Liposuction is a plastic surgery procedure that removes unwanted fat from under the skin by suction. In the US, liposuction is the most common of all cosmetic procedures.
Liposuction can target excess fat in a variety of areas on the body, including:
- Legs: inner thighs and outer thighs (saddle bags)
- Buttocks and hips (love handles)
- Tummy, upper arms and bra-rolls
- Double chin
- Contour irregularities
- Over-developed male breasts.
Is liposuction right for you?
Suitable candidates for liposuction surgery
People who consider liposuction treatment have typically tried to reduce excess fat from particular areas of the body and find that they’re unable to do so.
These fatty deposits under the skin may be the result of an ageing body; post-pregnancy and its impact on the tummy or breasts; or simply body shape.
So anyone looking to reduce areas of stubborn fat, despite maintaining a healthy diet and exercise, is likely to be a suitable candidate for liposuction surgery.
Alternative ways of treating excess fat
It’s worth understanding what other options to liposuction treatment are available to reduce unwanted pockets of fat – including diet and exercise, or other aesthetic procedures and plastic surgery – for example a tummy tuck or breast lift/reduction.
All of these considerations will be covered in your initial consultation with Miss Breahna and you can get further information about liposuction and fat-reducing treatments suited for your body and medical history.
Managing expectations about liposuction
Liposuction and weight loss
It is important for patients to understand that liposuction treatment is not intended for weight reduction, but targets stubborn areas of fat.
The aim of liposuction surgery is fat removal from the treated area.
The best liposuction candidates are those who are close to, or just above, their ideal body weight and have areas such as the lower abdomen or hips that out of proportion to other areas.
Liposuction and the individual
It’s important to have realistic expectations about your liposuction treatment, and understand that outcomes may vary depending on the individual.
The liposuction procedure may not be suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.
Cosmetic procedures: Liposuction surgery
This section aims to give you a good understanding of how liposuction procedures for fat removal work, though you’ll receive further information about the treatment itself in your first consultation with Miss Breahna.

The liposuction procedure explained
Liposuction is performed under general anaesthetic, by inserting a cannula under the skin through small incisions, to break up the fatty tissue in the treatment area.
A device is then attached to the cannula to suck out the fat. Each small incision is stitched after the fat has been removed, and a post surgical compression garment is applied.
How long will I be in hospital?
The procedure can be done as a same-day case when small areas of stubborn fat are treated, but often requires an overnight stay.
Recovery time and post op care
The next few weeks after liposuction will require gentle recovery time for most patients.
A liposuction aftercare plan is put in place and you will need to wear clothes that are compression garments and take painkillers during the recovery process.
Follow-up appointments will be arranged at 1, 2 and 6 weeks, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year post surgery to closely monitor your well-being after your liposuction treatment.
When will I see results from my liposuction treatment?
Most liposuction patients wish to see an immediate improvement following their fat-removal surgery. However, the full effects from liposuction procedures can usually be seen within 3-6 months.
Patients should maintain a healthy lifestyle and weight to continue enjoying the benefits of this surgery – possessing an improved body contour and increased self confidence.

Answers to commonly asked questions about liposuction
Is liposuction available on the NHS?
See the answer on the NHS website for current information.
How much does liposuction cost?
Costs of the procedure will be discussed during your first and second consultation with Miss Breahna.
Is liposuction painful?
Traditional liposuction surgery is performed under general anaesthesia, undertaken by a consultant anaesthetist, rather than local anaesthetic.
Most patients report some soreness for a week or more after liposuction. A course of painkillers will be administered post-operatively.
Does liposuction help with stretch marks?
Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity and it will not reduce stretch marks (which are often found on the tummy or thighs).
How is liposuction different to a tummy tuck?
Unlike a tummy tuck, liposuction is not used to remove excess skin or for skin tightening, and it will not eliminate stretch marks or tighten abdominal muscles. Liposuction targets fatty areas on different parts of the body, including the tummy.
What is non-surgical liposuction?
Surgeon Miss Anca Breahna performs traditional liposuction, or surgical liposuction. Non surgical liposuction, more commonly known as fat freezing, is a different procedure, where the fat-freezing procedure crystallizes targeted fat cells.
