Arm lift surgery is available in Chester through renowned cosmetic surgeon Anca Breahna – a Consultant Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeon at the Countess of Chester NHS Foundation Trust.
Also known as a brachioplasty or arm reduction surgery, arm lift surgery is a procedure that addresses concerns relating to the upper arm, improving the shape and tone of this region.
The impact can extend beyond the purely aesthetic into self-confidence and self-esteem too – any concern about our appearance can impact our overall wellbeing and so impinge on work, relationships and friendships.
For those with concerns about the appearance of their upper arms, arm lift surgery can have a profound impact.
Why Consider Arm Lift Surgery?
The loss of elasticity and shape and definition in the upper arm is not a direct medical concern and so there is no need to have surgery for health reasons.
Instead, people opt to have surgery to address the appearance, to then feel better about their appearance and perhaps improve their confidence and self-esteem.
As we age, it is common to lose elasticity in the upper arm, while significant weight loss can also be a cause. This leads to sagging skin, the appearance of what can be known colloquially as ‘bingo wings’.
Skin can hang loose from the underarm region, but surgery can reshape this.
The surgery can be for anyone who wants their arm definition to return to how it was formerly.
The Nature of Arm Lift Surgery
Brachioplasty is undertaken under general anaesthetic and can be performed at Ms Breahna’s Chester clinic.
The surgery sees incisions made on the underside of the upper arm and the tissue inside is then reshaped and tightened.
Excess skin and fat will be removed and the remaining skin then pulled together and stitched.
This procedure will always lead to scarring, these can be placed in the armpit and for just a short distance of the upper arm or along the inside of the arm from the elbow to the armpit.
These scars will be visible, though their impact likely to be far less than the loose skin they replaced.
The precise nature of surgery will vary by patient and the specific nature of their upper arm and amount of skin and fat to be removed. Full details would be discussed at consultation – the consultation a key part of any cosmetic procedure.
The consultation is the opportunity for you to talk and the surgeon to listen and ask any pertinent questions. A prospective-patient’s full medical history will also be taken into consideration.
Arm lift surgery does not produce major discomfort and any mild pain post surgery can be managed with standard painkillers in the vast majority of cases. Aspirin and ibuprofen should be avoided as they can promote bleeding – full details of how to care for yourself post surgery would be provided.
The Results From Arm Lift Surgery
Arm lift surgery produces superb results as it is a very specific procedure, addressing just a singular problem – the loose skin that may have developed on a patient’s arms.
Examples of past patients would be provided at consultation and Ms Breahna, in common with other leading surgeons, would outline the results achievable in any specific case.
Post-surgery and recovery, the upper arm area will be more defined, the loose and baggy skin gone. This may also boost confidence because we all feel that bit better when we have fewer concerns about our appearance.
Full results, with arms that are smoother, better contoured and more defined would be visible after from between three and six months post-surgery.
Suitability for Surgery
Broadly speaking, most prospective patients who seek this procedure would be suitable assuming they do have excess, baggy skin.
However, full medical history would always be factored in and there would be instances whereby this surgery was not recommended.
An example would be for anyone whose medical history suggests connective tissue disorder or poor quality tissue.
This would be discussed at consultation.
Recovery from Arm Lift Surgery
Patients can often go home the same day as surgery, though an overnight stay will be required in some instances.
Gentle recovery should then follow for around two weeks and some time off work is typically advised.
After two weeks, gentle massaging of the area can begin and the upper arm area will be treated with manual lymphatic drainage on a regular basis.
For six weeks, a tight pressure garment will be worn day and night and there will be regular follow-up appointments.
With Ms. Breahna these are at 1, 2 and 6 weeks and then 3 months, six months and a year.
Ms Breahna is also available to answer any queries or concerns in-between these scheduled appointments.

About Chester
Chester is a beautiful walled city located within the county of Cheshire and on the River Dee.
The city was founded as Castrum, the Roman fort located there called Deva Vitrix – this was one of the main army camps in the UK. Deva then became a major settlement in its own right.
Chester has a long and rich history, it was given city status as far back as 1541 and its importance is shown by the castle and walls, these remaining among the most complete city walls in the UK. The castle received numerous extra fortifications through the centuries, the initial castle built under the instructions of William the Conqueror.
Chester remained important through later centuries, for instance the nearby Newtown, with the Shropshire Union Canal were key to distribution.
The city is now a popular one for tourists, this a key industry, so too are public administration and retail.
A large number of well-known celebrities and famous people were born in Chester, or lived in the city, these include Russ Abbot, Beth Tweddle, Ben Foden and many people’s favourite James Bond – Daniel Craig.
