Breast Uplift – Mastopexy

Breast Uplift – Mastopexy

Breast uplift surgery is a procedure aimed at raising and reshaping sagging breasts to a more youthful and perky appearance.

Over time, factors such as pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, ageing, and gravity can take their toll on the breast’s natural elasticity, leading to a change in shape and position. Consultant Plastic Surgeon Anca Breahna, utilising her expertise in cosmetic breast surgery, offers mastopexy to address these concerns, restoring confidence and comfort in one’s body. This surgery not only elevates the position of the breasts but can also involve resizing the areola to keep them in proportion with the newly lifted breasts.

Who Needs Breast Uplift Surgery

Breast uplift surgery is ideal for patients experiencing breast sagging (ptosis) who wish to restore a more youthful and lifted appearance to their breasts. Candidates for this procedure usually share several characteristics or experiences:

  • Natural Ageing: Over time, the skin loses elasticity, leading to sagging. Those looking to counteract this natural ageing process are excellent candidates.
  • Post-Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Changes: Pregnancy and breastfeeding can significantly alter breast shape and volume. Mastopexy can help restore the pre-pregnancy appearance of the breasts.
  • Weight Fluctuations: Significant weight loss can leave the breasts looking deflated and saggy. An uplift can rejuvenate their appearance.
  • Desire for Improved Breast Contour Without Enlargement: Patients who are satisfied with their breast size but not the sagging can benefit from a lift, without the need for implants.

Anca evaluates your specific needs, medical history, and desired outcomes to determine suitability for breast uplift surgery, ensuring it aligns with your aesthetic goals and lifestyle.

Benefits of Breast Uplift Surgery

Breast uplift surgery offers many benefits, significantly impacting both physical appearance and psychological well-being. Anca highlights these advantages during consultations, helping you understand the positive changes you can expect:

  • Enhanced Breast Shape and Position: The primary benefit is the more youthful and lifted appearance of the breasts. This procedure corrects sagging, improves the position of the nipples and areolas, and can also adjust their size for better proportionality.
  • Increased Clothing Options and Comfort: Many women find that clothes fit better post-surgery, allowing for a wider range of fashion choices, including styles that were previously unsuitable due to the shape or size of their breasts.
  • Improved Body Image and Confidence: Restoring the breasts to a more youthful state can significantly boost self-esteem and body confidence, impacting various aspects of personal and social life.
  • Physical Relief: Although primarily cosmetic, the uplift can alleviate some discomforts associated with excessively saggy breasts, such as skin irritation beneath the breast fold.
  • Long-lasting Results: While no surgical procedure can halt the ageing process, the outcomes of a breast uplift are long-lasting. You can maintain results with a healthy lifestyle and proper support.

Types of Breast Uplift

Crescent Lift

Least invasive, the crescent lift involves a small incision running halfway around the top edge of the areola. It’s suitable for patients who require a minimal lift and is often combined with breast augmentation.

Peri-Areolar or “Donut” Lift

This method involves a circular incision around the areola, ideal for women with mild sagging. It can also be used to reduce areola size and is often paired with breast augmentation.

Vertical or “Lollipop” Lift

For moderate sagging and larger areola reduction, this technique involves two incisions: one around the areola and another running vertically from the bottom of the areola to the breast crease, creating a lollipop shape.

Inverted T or “Anchor” Lift

Used for significant sagging and reshaping, this approach adds a third incision along the breast crease, resembling an anchor. It offers the most dramatic transformation for those requiring extensive reshaping.

How Is the Procedure Performed

The breast uplift procedure is planned and executed by Anca to ensure optimal results and patient satisfaction. Here are more details about how it’s performed:

  • Consultation and Planning: Anca begins with a thorough consultation, discussing your goals, preferences, and medical history. She also conducts a physical examination to determine the best uplift technique.
  • Anaesthesia: Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the procedure.
  • Making the Incisions: Depending on the chosen technique, Anca makes the incisions as discreetly as possible, aiming to minimise visible scarring.
  • Reshaping the Breasts: Excess skin is removed, and breast tissue is lifted and reshaped to achieve a firmer, more youthful appearance. The nipples and areolas may be repositioned or resized to complement the new breast shape.
  • Closing the Incisions: Anca uses advanced suturing techniques to close the incisions, reducing scar visibility and promoting healing.
  • Recovery: You are moved to a recovery area and closely monitored. Detailed aftercare instructions are provided to support the healing process.

Each step is carried out with precision and care, emphasising safety, aesthetics, and your overall well-being.

Recovery and Aftercare

Recovery and aftercare are critical components of the breast uplift process, with Anca providing comprehensive guidance to ensure a smooth and comfortable healing period:

  • Immediate Post-Operative Care: After surgery, you may experience swelling, bruising, and discomfort, which can be managed with medications prescribed by Anca. A support bra or compression garment is often recommended to support the breasts as they heal.
  • Follow-Up Visits: Anca schedules follow-up appointments to monitor the healing process, remove sutures if necessary, and address any concerns. These visits are vital to ensuring a smooth recovery and optimal results.
  • Activity Restrictions: Patients are advised to avoid heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for a specified period, usually 4-6 weeks, to prevent complications and allow the body to heal properly.
  • Long-Term Care: To maintain the results of the uplift, wearing supportive bras, especially during exercise, and maintaining a stable weight are recommended. Proper skincare, including sun protection, can help minimise scarring.
