Who Needs Breast Implant Removal and Replacement Surgery

Breast implant removal and replacement surgery caters to a diverse group of patients, each with their unique reasons for undergoing the procedure. Anca has identified several common scenarios among her patients:

  • Lifestyle Changes and Personal Preferences: Over time, your aesthetic preferences or lifestyle might evolve, leading to the desire for a different breast size or shape. Those seeking a more natural look, or wishing to resize their implants to better suit their current lifestyle, often consider this surgery.
  • Implant Complications: Some patients experience complications such as capsular contracture (hardening of the implant due to scar tissue), implant rupture, or displacement. Removal and replacement surgery addresses these issues, restoring comfort and appearance.
  • Ageing and Gravity Effects: The natural ageing process and gravity can alter the appearance of breast implants over time. Women looking to maintain or rejuvenate the youthful appearance of their breasts opt for this procedure to adjust to these changes.
  • Health Considerations: For health reasons, including concerns about the integrity of the implant or the desire to switch from saline to silicone (or vice versa), you may choose to have your implants removed and replaced.
  • Revision for Improved Results: Some patients may not be satisfied with the results from a previous breast augmentation surgery. Anca works with you to correct any issues and achieve the desired aesthetic outcome with a new set of implants.

Benefits of Breast Implant Removal and Replacement Surgery

Undergoing breast implant removal and replacement surgery with Anca offers numerous benefits, tailored to address the specific needs and goals of her patients:

  • Enhanced Comfort and Well-being: Addressing and correcting complications such as capsular contracture or implant rupture can significantly improve physical comfort and peace of mind.
  • Updated Aesthetic: This surgery allows you to update your breast size and shape to better match your current aesthetic preferences or lifestyle changes, contributing to a more satisfying body image.
  • Correction of Previous Surgery Issues: For those dissatisfied with the results of a prior augmentation, this procedure offers a chance for correction, aligning the outcomes more closely with your vision.
  • Natural Ageing Accommodation: As the body changes with age, implants may no longer complement the overall body shape as they once did. Removal and replacement surgery can adjust to these changes, maintaining a harmonious and youthful appearance.
  • Confidence Boost: Ultimately, the surgery can have a profound impact on self-esteem and confidence, allowing you to feel more comfortable and confident in your appearance, which can permeate all aspects of life.

Choosing to undergo breast implant removal and replacement is a significant decision that involves careful consideration of your health, aesthetic goals, and the potential for an enhanced quality of life. Anca’s expertise and personalised approach ensure that each patient receives the best possible care and outcomes that align with their individual desires and expectations.

Types of Breast Implant Removal and Replacement Procedures

Implant Removal Only

This procedure involves the removal of breast implants without replacing them. It’s suitable for patients who wish to return to their natural breast size or who have experienced complications. Anca may also perform a breast lift during this procedure to address any sagging caused by the removal of the implants.

Implant Exchange

If you are looking to change the size, shape, or type of your implants, you can opt for an implant exchange. This involves removing the existing implants and replacing them with new ones. Choices include switching between saline and silicone implants, adjusting the implant size, or selecting a different profile to achieve a desired aesthetic.

Capsulectomy

In cases of capsular contracture (where scar tissue forms around the implant, causing it to feel hard), Anca may perform a capsulectomy, removing the scar tissue along with the implant before replacing it with a new one. This procedure aims to alleviate discomfort and restore a natural feel and appearance.

Revision Surgery

This encompasses a variety of adjustments that can be made during the removal and replacement process, such as correcting implant malposition, addressing rippling, or making changes to the breast pocket. Anca tailors the revision strategy to address specific issues while achieving your desired outcome.

How Is the Procedure Performed

Anca plans and executes the breast implant removal and replacement procedure to ensure safety, comfort, and satisfaction. Here are the details of the process:

  • Consultation and Planning: The journey begins with a thorough consultation, where Anca discusses your medical history, reasons for seeking surgery, and aesthetic goals. This discussion helps in selecting the appropriate procedure and implants.
  • Anaesthesia: Procedures are performed under general anaesthesia to ensure your comfort throughout the surgery.
  • Incision: Anca typically uses the same incision sites from the previous breast augmentation to minimise additional scarring. The location and length of the incision depend on the specific procedure and the type of implants being used.
  • Removal and Replacement: Once the incision is made, Anca carefully removes the old implants. If a capsulectomy is required, the scar tissue around the implant is also removed. New implants are then placed into the breast pockets, which may be adjusted to accommodate the new implant size or shape.
  • Closure and Recovery: Incisions are closed with sutures, and the chest is bandaged or fitted with a surgical bra. Anca provides detailed aftercare instructions to support the healing process.

Breast implant removal and replacement surgery can be customised according to the specific needs and goals of each patient. Anca offers a range of options to ensure the best possible outcomes.

Recovery and Aftercare

The recovery period following breast implant removal and replacement surgery is a critical time for healing and achieving the best possible outcomes. Anca provides her patients with comprehensive guidance and support throughout this process, emphasising the importance of following aftercare instructions closely.

  • Immediate Post-Operative Care: Immediately after the procedure, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and discomfort. Anca prescribes pain management medications and may recommend ice packs to reduce swelling. A special surgical bra or compression garment is often required to support the new breast contour and minimise swelling.
  • Activity Restrictions: Patients are advised to take it easy for the first few weeks post-surgery. Strenuous activities, heavy lifting, and vigorous exercise should be avoided to prevent complications and ensure proper healing. Anca provides a tailored timeline for when normal activities and exercise routines can gradually be resumed.
  • Follow-Up Visits: Regular check-ups with Anca are essential. These appointments allow her to monitor the healing process, remove any sutures if necessary, and address any concerns you may have. These visits are also an opportunity for Anca to assess the settling of the implants and the overall success of the surgery.
  • Long-Term Care: Long-term care involves adhering to healthy lifestyle choices to maintain the surgery results. Anca advises on proper breast support, especially during physical activities, to prolong the outcomes. She also guides on scar care to ensure minimal visibility.

Frequently asked questions

If you wish to change the size of your implants (go bigger or smaller), experience symptoms related to hardening or rupture of your implants, or simply have decided that you no longer require them, then you may be suitable for this treatment.

Due to the popularity of breast augmentation, implant replacement and capsulectomy is a commonly performed procedure and considered to be safe. Your welfare is paramount to us and these operations are performed by Miss Breahna, a skilled surgeon who specialises in this field.

No pain will be felt during the operation itself as general anaesthetic will be used. For the recovery period, post treatment, a suitable course of pain relief will be prescribed to help with any discomfort.

As with breast augmentation, the removal and replacement of implants will also see swelling and bruising for a few weeks post treatment. Infection, bleeding (haematoma), seroma, delayed healing, loss of nipple, poor scarring and asymmetry are infrequent risks.

The procedure may incur a period of 2 weeks recovery time to allow for successful healing, and time off work may be required. Driving will be possible after 2 weeks. It may need up to 3 weeks before travelling abroad and up to 12 weeks before returning to the gym.
