This condition can also cause functional issues as the sagging eyelids can obscure the vision.

Bright, expressive eyes are so important to the appearance that these changes to the skin around the eyes can be demoralising, making you feel self-conscious.

Anca Breahna, one of the region’s few female plastic surgeons, offers safe and effective eyelid surgery at her clinic in Cheshire to improve the appearance of your eye area and restore your youthful appearance.

What are the main causes of droopy eyelids?

Genetic inheritance

The reason for your hooded eyelids may be written in your DNA as there can be a genetic predisposition to develop both drooping upper eyelids and bags under the eyes. If you look around your relatives you may see that droopy lids run in the family.

Ageing

More commonly these conditions are a result of ageing.

As we age, our skin loses elasticity and can become stretched with the excess skin looking saggy and marked with wrinkles and lines.

The muscles around the eye become weaker allowing the upper eyelid to droop.

The structures in the lower eyelid also become laxer allowing the fat that lies around the eyes to bulge forwards creating the appearance of eye bags.

The lack of smoothness in the eye area allows hollows to develop under the eyes creating shadow and the illusion of dark circles.

If you are dissatisfied with your eye area, eyelid surgery will restore a smoother and wide-eyed look.

Am I a good candidate for this surgery?

If your droopy eyelids and eye bags are bothering you then you could consider this surgery.

Miss Breahna has an initial consultation with all her patients where she will discuss your options with you and understand exactly what you want to achieve from surgery.

She will also make sure that you have realistic expectations and that you have a clear idea of the risks and benefits of blepharoplasty surgery.

Before considering surgery Miss Breahna will take a thorough medical history to ensure your suitability. She will discuss any medications or health conditions with you but will also ask your permission to contact your GP for more details.

If you are a smoker Miss Breahna may suggest that you cut back before surgery.

It is good practice to have a second consultation when considering aesthetic procedures to give you time to think about the procedure and ask any questions.

What to expect during blepharoplasty surgery

Eyelid surgery is a surgical procedure that aesthetic plastic surgeons like Anca Breahna use to remove excess skin, muscle and fat from the area around the eye.

Depending upon the procedure your cosmetic surgeon will use either a general or local anaesthetic.

Upper eyelid surgery and lower eyelid surgery are both straightforward and popular treatments but are performed by your plastic surgeon in two different ways.

Upper blepharoplasty

Upper eyelid surgery is a relatively simple plastic surgery procedure that can nevertheless have a significant impact, restoring a more youthful appearance.

During upper blepharoplasty surgery, Miss Breahna will make an incision in the crease of your upper eyelid. She will then trim the excess tissue and skin.

At the same time, she will reposition the fat deposits around the lid and make the muscles tauter to smooth out wrinkles.

Will I need to stay in hospital after my eyelid surgery?

This type of eyelid surgery can be performed with a local anaesthetic and you will be treated as an out-patient.

Lower Blepharoplasty surgery

During eye bag removal, Miss Breahna makes an incision below the lower lash line and then lifts a flap of skin away from the lower lid.

This allows her to remove or remodel the fat tissue causing problems in the under-eye area.

The flap is then reinstated and trimmed to remove excess skin.

If necessary, Miss Breahna can tighten the lower eyelid at the same time to achieve the optimum effect.

Will I need a general anaesthetic for lower eyelid blepharoplasty surgery?

This surgery is more invasive than plastic surgery for the upper eyelid and is performed under a general anaesthetic.

You will need to spend a night in hospital after your operation.

Is blepharoplasty surgery painful?

The surgery itself will not be painful as the appropriate anaesthetic will be used. There may be some discomfort after the procedure but this can be resolved with simple pain relief.

What is the recovery time after eyelid surgery?

The skin around the eyes is very fragile and sensitive, and there may be some swelling for at least two weeks after blepharoplasty surgery.

Most patients find that staying upright and sleeping raised on pillows help this puffiness disperse by encouraging the fluid to drain away from the face.

Ice packs and witch-hazel eye packs can also soothe and relieve swelling and bruising.

You may need to schedule two weeks’ leave from work.

Patients who have had an upper blepharoplasty surgery usually recover more quickly than those who have had lower blepharoplasty surgery.

How soon after surgery will I be able to wear my contact lenses?

Your eyes may be irritated by wearing contact lenses so it may be more comfortable for you to wear glasses for a few weeks as you are healing.

It is a also good idea to wear sunglasses after surgery as you may experience watery eyes and find that they are extra sensitive to sunlight.

When will I see the final results of my blepharoplasty?

About three months after your plastic surgery your bruising and swelling will have disappeared and you will be delighted with your more youthful appearance.

Your eyes will be wide and sparkly once more and your upper and lower lids will be smooth and lifted.
