Am I a good candidate for surgery on the hands and wrist?

If you have a problem with the nerve, bones, joints, ligaments or muscles of your wrist, hand or fingers then it may be appropriate for Miss Breahna to perform hand surgery on you.

Problems with the hand can be caused by injury or disease and can be both painful and affect hand function.

Miss Breahna’s experience and expertise will enable her to offer you a speedy diagnosis and to suggest the appropriate treatment.

Common conditions treated at the Cheshire hand clinic

Tendon Surgery

Conditions such as Trigger Finger and De Quervain’s Disease, affect the tendons, causing pain in the fingers, thumb and wrist.

Sometimes a cortisone injection in the affected area can be helpful but in severe cases, Miss Breahna can relieve the painful symptoms of these conditions with minor surgery.

The tendons can be released through a small incision on the palm side of the hand or on the thumb side of the wrist.

Arthritis of the hand

This common condition can be both painful and seriously affect your ability to carry out everyday tasks.

Miss Breahna frequently performs the following procedures on her Cheshire patients with arthritis to reduce pain and where possible to improve function:

Joint fusion – stabilizing the affected joint

Joint replacement – replacing the knuckle joint with a prosthetic implant

Trapeziectomy – surgical removal of the trapezium, a small bone in the thumb.

Ganglion Cysts

Miss Breahna often removes these benign fluid-filled masses at the clinic in Cheshire by draining them with a syringe. Aspirating the fluid is a relatively pain-free and quick procedure that leaves no scars.

Larger cysts can be cut out in a procedure that will require a few stitches.

Dupuytren’s disease

Dupuytren’s disease causes flexion of the ring and little finger and may eventually prevent you from straightening either finger.

The aim of treatment is to straighten the fingers, restoring as much function as possible. The condition is progressive and further intervention may be required in the future.

Miss Breahna offers three treatments at her Cheshire clinic. These are Xiapex (collagenase) injections, a needle aponeurotomy and open fasciectomy.

Carpal tunnel syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome causes tingling, numbness and pain in the fingers and hand. Surgical intervention can be required for more serious cases and treatment has a high success rate.

Miss Breahna will make an incision in your wrist to allow her to cut the carpal tunnel ligament, releasing pressure on the nerve and relieving symptoms.

Will I need aftercare after surgery for hand and wrist issues in Cheshire?

Miss Breahna often prescribes a course of physiotherapy to ensure optimum results and restoration of maximum function after surgery.

Is downtime required after hand surgery in Cheshire?

Most of the procedures outlined above are performed in the day clinic using local anaesthetic and you will be able to return home the same day.

Depending on the surgery and your role, you may need to take time off work and most patients are advised to refrain from driving for a while.
